From motherhood to changing the world for women and girls: Kate Blakemore invites the community to ‘Meet the Author’

Her-Place Charitable Trust is inviting women and book lovers to its new Women’s Centre in Crewe for a special ‘Meet the Author’ evening with founder and CEO Kate Blakemore.

The event will give guests the opportunity to meet Kate, hear the stories behind her two books – Mum’s the Word: The Mothering Journey and The Motherwell Journey – and join a wider conversation about motherhood, women’s lives and the changes Kate believes are still needed for women and girls today.

Kate’s books draw on her own experiences and, importantly, the experiences and stories of other women who have contributed to her journey. The evening will explore the reality behind motherhood, the highs, lows, challenges and unexpected moments – alongside the experiences of women whose voices have helped shape the work Kate has done over the years.

But this won’t simply be an evening about books.

Kate plans to use the conversation to look at what the world currently looks like for women and girls, the inequalities and challenges she continues to see through her work with Her-Place, and the areas where she believes we need to do more to create a fairer and safer future.

Kate said:

“Writing my books has given me the opportunity to capture some of the stories, experiences and conversations that have shaped my own journey and the journey of Her-Place.

“But I don’t see these books as being just about me. They are about the women whose stories, experiences and honesty have helped shape the conversations we need to have.

“I’m really looking forward to sharing some of those stories and talking about what I’m seeing now through my work with women and girls, the challenges they are facing, the inequalities that still exist and, importantly, what I think we need to change.

“I hope it will be an evening where we can talk, laugh, perhaps challenge each other a little and leave with something to think about.”

Discover the new Her-Place Women’s Centre

The event will also give guests the opportunity to visit Her-Place’s brand-new Women’s Centre in Crewe and explore one of its newest additions, the Her-Place Feminist Library.

The library has been created as a welcoming space where books can become conversation starters, helping women discover new ideas, hear different perspectives and connect with others. Her-Place sees reading and shared conversations as another way of supporting women’s wellbeing and creating community.

The new Women’s Centre is part of Her-Place’s wider vision to create a welcoming, accessible space where women and girls can find support, information, opportunities and connection. The charity’s work has expanded from its original focus on mothers to supporting women and girls at different stages of their lives.

Kate added:

“I’m particularly excited that people will get to see our new Women’s Centre as part of the evening.

“The Feminist Library is something I’ve been really looking forward to creating. I love the idea that a book can start a conversation, challenge the way we think or simply give us an escape when we need one.

“Hopefully people will come along, have a lovely evening, discover the library, have a look around the centre and perhaps find a book they want to take home.”

Signed copies of both books will be available to purchase at the event, giving guests the opportunity to take home a personal copy and perhaps a little piece of the conversation with them.

There will also be a few special goodies for guests to take away, making the evening an opportunity to celebrate books, women, conversation and the new Her-Place space.
